You might want to try using the 64 bit plugin instead.  Check the list
archives for the thread "Flash player for Lenny/64 - But from where?"
(less than a week ago) for direction.

I can't say that this will solve your update problem but when I was
running the 32 bit plugin using nspluginwrapper under Gentoo I used to
have huge problems.
