You don't even need to kill gdm or logout as user.
From any root-shell (even in an xterm) simply do a
'startx -- :1' and it will start another X11-Server on another virtual console. You can switch back and forth with <ctrl><alt>+<f7> and <ctrl><alt>+<f8>.
