Traditionally, this behavior is controlled by a config file in /etc. Unfortunately, modern FLOSS (Gnome/KDE/...) doesn't make it easy to find whatever you need to fix it (locate, mlocate, slocate, what's installed today?!?). Sometimes it's a config file, sometimes you have to fiddle with gconf (or whatever), KDE (dunno, sorry)?!? I recommend avoiding apps like that (incl. Gnome/KDE/...), but that rule only seems to work for me. -- Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
