Well, I got a chance to test Microsoft VX-5000 webcam on Debian Sid, kernel 2.6.26-1. I am pleased to confirm that it works out of the box with xawtv as well as skype. Its mic works too. Just wanted to confirm this here for a poor soul who might search for this later on on google. 'arecord -l' shows this: card 2: VX5000 [Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 and lsusb lists the webcam as: Bus 002 Device 005: ID 045e:0728 Microsoft Corp. Its low light performance is okay for the scenario around my desk. Will write more if I notice anything new. Regards. -- Please reply to this list only.
