Are you using debian-multimedia? IIRC there was some conflict between the libav* packages from debian-multimedia and the vlc provided by the official repos that had similar symptoms. The fix was to roll your libav* packages back to the official packages. According to debian-multimedia's front page new versions of libav* that work with vlc are available in experimental.
