I've run into this before, but can't find the answer again (it's buried by *buntu forum cruft). With "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" I get:
xserver-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possibly-customised configuration And it just kicks me out. How to over-ride that? I promise to write it down this time.
