Both my machines are PII and the boot messages say something about the clock being unreliable... I found that OpenNTPd, since it only jumps the time on startup if its out by more than 3 minutes, and then slews slowly, couldn't keep up with the drifting nature of the two boxes' clocks and they drifted apart. ntpd keeps them in better sync.
