maybe you should reinstall the driver of your ATI card
Do you mean install fglrx? I don't have it installed at the moment, i
assume it is using the default ati driver from Xorg.

Hello,
I run debian etchnhalf 4.0r5a AMD64.
I just installed a new desktop system (std and desktop
packages). Since then i have done very little to add to it.
Just installed foo2qpdl for my printer and also dvdrip from
debian multimedia.
Once in gnome i was informed of some new updated packages,
so i did the update. However i cannot recall which packages
were in there.
Since the update, i now cannot boot into the system anymore.
Symptoms are as follows:
<snip>
What do dmesg, syslog, Xorg.0.log say?
Do you use a display manager? If so, use Knoppix to turn it off
and boot again, if this is your only partition, that is.

Thanks for the reply.
I run GDM as display manager (etch default). Disabled GDM and this time
the system would boot, but when i run startx from the console prompt,
the same symptoms occur - black screen, no response from keyboard,
cannot change consoles etc.
I compared the kern.log files from before (system working) and after and
the are basically the same apart from:
* some devices are detected in different order. Eg, eth1 comes up in
different sequence, USB controllers are detected in different order.
* i have three additional lines about rtc which i didn't have before:
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: pnp: the driver 'rtc_cmos' has been
registered
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: rtc_cmos 00:05: disabling not supported
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: rtc_cmos: probe of 00:05 failed with
error -16
* as mentioned in earlier post, i now have some lines about the radeonfb
which i didn't have before:
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: Found Intel x86 BIOS ROM Image
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: Retrieved PLL infos from BIOS
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: Reference=27.00 MHz (RefDiv=12)
Memory=325.00 Mhz, System=200.00 MHz
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: PLL min 20000 max 40000
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: i2c-adapter i2c-3: unable to read
EDID block.
Dec 21 08:27:52 father last message repeated 2 times
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: Monitor 1 type DFP found
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: EDID probed
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb: Monitor 2 type no found
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: Console: switching to colour frame buffer
device 160x64
Dec 21 08:27:52 father kernel: radeonfb (0000:01:00.0): ATI Radeon [`
As i said earlier, seems like the addition of radeonfb has broken my
xorg or something.
Any further ideas, as i do not want to reinstall and waste time
downloading the packages again for desktop system (400Mb).
