I think the simplest way to see if it's charging would be to run cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state | grep remain Make a note of the number, then run the same command a few moments later. If the number has gone up, the battery is charging correctly, and the problem is the way the graphical interface is reporting the battery state.
