Well, xorg.conf did work. Per default it's just not configured to work with gsynaptics (there will be users without gsynaptics, or those who don't want gsynaptics activated by default, etc. YMMV). You should have read /usr/share/doc/gsynaptics/README which will tell you how to activate it.
