Unfortunately, this id is either read from /etc/hostid or calculated
from the IPv4 address which a gethostbyhostname_r(3) on the
system's hostname returns.
This means the id is not persistant.
What *is* persistent about computing, anyway?
The Debian installation I am writing this from was first installed
on almost completely different hardware. The only commonality
between that PC and my current box is that I brought the boot disk
(hda) with me.
If that spindle starts to fail, I'll simply restore my /etc and
/home to a new spindle, with the same packages installed.
