For calc, that's true and the calc package has been removed from Lenny
already. For Gnus, this is only partly true, since the standalone gnus
package is based on a development version and has features not included
in Emacs 22.

Apparently it does not happen to anyone else, or there would have been
more complaints about it.

Why that?  It is perfectly reasonable to install both emacs22 and
emacs21 and to install add-ons that only work with one of them.
