Since you are still on etch you can open a root terminal and run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg You will get some questions. Generally the ones you have no idea just press Enter. For the monitor you will have to provide the specs (HSync and VSync range) according to your monitor's manual and there will also be a list of resolutions to use where you can mark (with the spacebar) the ones you want to use.
