hmm ... I am not familiar with hgfs. But looking at http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-vmware-tools-hgfs-module-on-ubuntu-gutsy-gibbon-7.10 it appears it allows folders sharing between the guest and the host. Never tried that so I am not sure what could be wrong.
