Very cool. No idea what is going on here but your suggestion works like a charm. It appears you can unselect aliasing with a commandline argument or in (on my system) the system wide startup file, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/GV. Thanks so much for the tip, Jaume.
