The thing that got me thinking was, if this was a process generating
this disk I/O, or someone being malicious in generating this disk I/O, I
would not have known which file was actually being accessed as I only
found out the process. Is that possible? I am sure that Samba can be
configured to log the information, but what about other processes? Is
there a good way to tell what process/file is accessing the disk?
iostat (in the sysstat package) may be what you want.
What would you have done differently?
Large-caliber shotguns have always done the trick for me in
eliminating this kind of unwelcome access.

Scientists are people, too. IOW, they also "crave power, money,
respect, and influence, and they also fear for their jobs. Each
can be a healthy motivator, but each has the ability to turn a
good scientist into a bad one; and in some cases, they can turn
a good scientist into a charlatan."
