Now, I saw somewhere on the web[1] that
chmod 1777 /tmp
might solve the problem. I remember that I was
not able to write to /tmp after the problem came.
I will try this when I am back home after work and let
you know.

For directory /tmp, you should chmod 777 /tmp and chmod o+t /tmp[1]
The t means stick, man chmod for detail.
