Maybe have a look at the io scheduler

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler
noop anticipatory deadline [cfq]


I have filed a bug report against 2.6.25-2, I had some ooops when under
load, transferring files over the network (part of a back), never
happened with 2.6.22
