I got an LC2100DC from Linux Certified* and I love it. It's small and lightweight with good battery life but plenty powerful. The wireless card also supports all kinds of encryptions which was a big thing on my campus. The best part is that they support Linux completely which means two things: 1) excellent Linux support from their team and 2) I have installed many variations of Linux on the Laptop and the hardware is recognized and works**. Their support is really good and the ability to switch distro's for whatever reason is a huge benefit.
As far as their default installs they offer Fedora and Ubuntu. I asked nicely and they sent me their installers for both. Or if you want to install your own OS however you see fit, you can save 50$ and have them just ship the hardware to you. Plus, you can buy the Laptop without the Windows tax. :-) I don't work for them or anything, I am just a big fan of their work for me so far. :-D Have fun! ~Stack~ * http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux-laptop-lc2100dc.html ** Sound card has had issues on Ubuntu but their Tech Support helped me out in finding that it is a module that Ubuntu doesn't seem to load by default so it was an easy fix. I was able to get the hardware (wireless, hibernate, ect.) to work under Slackware, Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, and of course (my favorite) Debian. -----Original Message----- From: Thomas H. The college is offering packages starting at $1,399 (Dell Latitude D630) and $1,499 (Lenoveo ThinkPad T61) all with 2GB memory, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, Wireless, 1394 Port, Bluetooth, Vista 32Bit Business OS, SmartCare/4in1 Media Card Reader and Microsoft Office 2007 Professional pre-installed by certified technicians located on campus. Three year warranty and 1GB Flash Drive thrown in. Money is tight, of course. If I were the student and there is a modest-priced laptop with Debian and OpenOffice I'd take it in a flash. I'm not the student, I'm his 79 year old grandfather and I don't want him to start off at a disadvantage. There are certainly many college students and recent grads that subscribe to this list. I would value your insights. Tom -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
