It's an option, but I don't know if it's the default.

It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be anymore.  The sendmail.mc is
pretty straightforward to use, and you don't really have to know anything about
sendmail.cf anymore.

I still prefer postfix, but not for the ease of configuration.

I would say that if you want to be a Unix admin, you'd better know sendmail, if
only so that you can make a coherent argument for replacing it with something
that you like better.
