The sendmail.mc is pretty straightforward to use, and you don't really have to know anything about sendmail.cf anymore. I still prefer postfix, but not for the ease of configuration. I would say that if you want to be a Unix admin, you'd better know sendmail, if only so that you can make a coherent argument for replacing it with something that you like better. M
