Perhaps I have taken everything you wrote just a little too literally, 
but if you did what you just wrote, I am quite sure it will not help.

In XF86Config, there may be a section that says: Section "ServerFlags".

In your case, I believe it would look like this:

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option  "SWCursor"
EndSection
 
(Disclaimer: This is an educated guess, which you will have to verify 
for yourself.)

Also, it sounds like you're saying that you only edited the file. You
will have to restart X for the change to take effect.
