I think the "savedefault" option is no longer part of the default configuration for GRUB on Debian. You can disable it yourself, and if you get hung up while starting the system you can edit this option out for that particular startup.
You don't provide details of the error you ran into (the exact events leading up to it and the text of the error message), and your solution sounds as if it's a different issue.
