Maybe something in your ~/.mozilla directory is causing the problem. Does it happen to all users? If you've truly wiped mozilla clean and reinstalled every piece, it's hard to see why About Plugins would cause a crash. I'm not sure, but I still think the most likely explanation is that there are some configuration files that are corrupted. Wipe it clean: apt-get remove --purge everything mozilla-related, then find / -name "moz*" -o -name ".moz*" and terminate everything you find. Then try again.
