I'd love to see a project, within Debian or not, that works on "user
enhancement" packages. The goal would be to create various *optional*
packages that could be added to a stock debian system to give it some of
the sizzle that attracts some users to ubu, etc. This way, the Debian
purist could just ignore the glitz.

We already have that:
aptitude install kde gnome compiz
In addition, there are two special Debian installation CDs that seem to
install KDE and Xfce4 by default. Since I'm a Debian "purist," I never
use them, but others will find them very useful.
Perhaps rather than to encourage newbies to try Kubuntu first, we can
point them to debian-40r3-i386-kde-CD-1.iso :-)
