Thanks. That is the case with me; it's displayed as default setting. As
I now realize, the problem occurs only for https:// sites. http:// are
correctly handled by iceweasel.

I have now copied the hint you gave to
network.protocol-handler.app.https and now it works!

In full the solution for people experiencing a similar problem is to
enter the advanced configuration editor:

Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced tab -> General tab -> Config Editor...
button -> enter

Within the field with preferences press right mouse button -> new -> string

Enter 'network.protocol-handler.app.https' into the box that opens

Enter 'x-www-browser' into the second box that opens.

Done.

I'm not sure, if I should file a bug? It's at least irritating that
icedove would open epiphany instead of iceweasel for https://
