AFAIK with ifconfig you need to supply all (relevant) parameters: ifconfig eth0 address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 then set the default gateway: route add default gw 192.168.0.254 and a nameserver: echo "nameserver 123.123.123.123" >> /etc/resolv.conf (though this should be probably done by hand because order in resolv.conf matters) You are probably looking for ifup which should activate your interface according to the configuration in /etc/network/interfaces Regards, Andrei -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.
