You don't need setxkbmap to switch between different keyboard
layouts. I also use KDE, but I prefer to use kkbswitch and set up X as
follows:

Yes. I switched to kkbswitch because I had problems with KDE's management of multiple layouts, although setxkbmap does not crash here (I am using as a work-around for a bug in xkb-data).
