This is pretty vague, you want to test a variable from the client system or the host system? Who should take an action? The easiest way to make a non-interactive telnet session "do something" is to change the login shell to (for example) /home/username/do_something.sh instead of /bin/bash. -Mark -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
