Hardware problem likely related to how you physically installed the drive. If it is IDE: If on its own cable, have it jumpered to "master" If on a cable with another drive, have: the drive jumpered "master" the CD-RW jumpered "slave" Problems can arrise if a hard drive (e.g. hda) is on a cable on its own but not jumpered either way.
