ok, getting further. after compiling with the correct gcc (make CC=gcc-4.0)
the system finds the card at boot time and ifconfig -a gets, among other
things:
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

but when i try to use the device, trouble. e.g.:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.16.4$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
or:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.6.16.4$ sudo airmon-ng wlan0
usage: airmon-ng <start|stop> <interface> [channel]

my kernel is 2.6.16.4. etch is the whatever.
