Thank you Pál, I had already tried that: apt-get install --reinstall postgresql-7.4 and it did not help :( Any other ideas? what is really annoying is that I don't really see how to troubleshoot the problem, as there is no output from the initscripts that come with the debian package, and no errors in the log sections to to help me troubleshoot where the init script is going wrong. also the debian supplied initscipts source a secondary initscript file and they appear to be identical (visually :)) on this server to similar other servers that I had updated. very puzzling ....
