my etch box has no .xinitrc, fwiw.  It uses ~/.xsession in the debian
default choice in gdm with openbox WM.

You should find some useful clues in /var/log.  Especially in Xorg.0.log
and /var/log/gdm/*

Obviously, if it works with the linux CD, you're on your way to a
solution.  Note the differences in the above logs for the CD session vs.
the Etch session.  Or if something got clobbered in .gnome*, maybe
create a new user to compare the dot files.  Just a thought.
