I did some research on this and found that it is the result of missing firmware blob in /lib/firmware/ in the initramfs. There is more info in fixed ubuntu bug #82382 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/82382 It also mentions a patch to initramfs here: http://help.lockergnome.com/linux/aic94xx-firmware-initramfs-ftopict394102.html I will let you know if I can make a d-i image with this installed.
