First of all, run totem from the command line (an xterm) and see if you get any useful output from that. Also, do you get any visualisation to work when you play music (you may have to turn on visualisation in the preferences)? Finally, do you get *anything* at all in the screen when you just start up totem without an arguments. You should see a logo of a movie clapper with the word totem in it. A
