Hi, I've setup a new machine with Debian amd64 Linux on a Core 2 Duo E6600 (Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3, with 1Gb RAM) The network card is a ET1310. This brand new card has currently no driver in the kernel, but there is one available at Sourceforge. I use a vanilla 2.6.20 kernel, necessary to support the motherboard fully.
The machine works fine, except network programs using UDP protocol. Currently the machine is in an intranet. If I start "portmap", it takes a long time and the following errors were found in /var/log/messages: May 30 09:31:28 cpu kernel: portmap: server localhost not responding, timed out May 30 09:31:28 cpu kernel: RPC: failed to contact portmap (errno -5). The above two lines appear several times in the log. On the machine, that works as a gateway to the Internet, I found the following message in the log: May 30 09:45:41 gateway kernel: martian destination 127.0.0.1 from 10.1.1.18, dev eth1 This shows, that every attempt to send an UDP packet to the local host on the new machine (cpu), is forwarded to the network. Trying to mount a NFS drive results in the same behavior. There is no problem with other programs like SSH, X11, etc. So TCP protocol works fine. Could this be a problem with the network driver for the ET1310 network card? Or is there something misconfigured somewhere? Any help or hint would be appreciated.
