Correct.  aplay will not play an mp3; xmms, which you have working, will
play it.

My working etch system (with alsa) shows 10 such items, fwiw.

Kernel is 2 years old?  Even etch has kernel 2.6.18-4-686.  Might I
suggest you're due for an upgrade for security reasons.

So, if I understand you, you only need to get flash sound working.  The
flashplayer version 9 (current) only supports alsa, so perhaps you're
still using an old version 7 (which only supports oss)?

Also, do search the archives as sound issues have been discussed
frequently since etch was released as stable.
