Debian has been upgraded to 4.1. I think.
My suspicion is that your system has not been entirely upgraded. I'd
suggest:
#aptitude update
#aptitude autoclean (to free your drive space of no-longer needed .deb
packages)
#aptitude dist-upgrade
#aptitude install k3b
On freenode/#debian, I went in, three different days and different times

I've never had to initialize an unformatted CD; that's just an automagic
part of the burn process in my experience (limited, granted).
The computer, a Toshiba Satellite A30 with 1.2 gig ram and a 40 gig hard
drive was originally dual boot MS-Debian 3.1. Windows quit. Who knows
why.
Printer: HP officejet 4110 all-in-one - cupsys installed and set up
according to the information I found but still non-functional. However, it
will copy and send faxes.
It will copy and send faxes from Debian, or from the all-in-one's control
interface on the unit itself? (Printing is still way too hard, in Linux,
Windows, and Mac OS/X.)

What I really want to find out is not necessarily how to do the specifics,
with the possible exception of the cd problem, but how and where to find
relevant and current information.
Searching this lists archive for the past year will turn up a lot of
information about many topics. If that doesn't find your answer (and general
Googling fails you also), posting here is probably your best bet.
How to type wouldn't be bad either, but that's beyond even Linux.
