I think you can use something like rsync to make an exact copy of the
contents of hda3 to hda1. Boot to hda1 and rebuild the initrd (I don't
know the exact command so I usually just do an
'aptitude reinstall linux-image...'). If you can't boot to hda1 you can
still use the install in hda3 to chroot to hda1 and rebuild the initrd.
