No remotely standard video mode can squash its data into 256K. Not sure why debconf got the memory so wrong. You could try running the configuration program again as before - this time, be sure to 1) select the appropriate card - "GeForce" or "nvidia" or similar and 2) specify the video memory - you may need to give this in KB, i.e. 64MB = 64 x 1024K = 65536K. Alternatively, you could edit XF86Config-4 by hand. Change the "driver" line in the "Device" section to "vesa" or maybe "nv" and add a line in the same section that says VideoRam 65536 Hope that helps...
