I am sorry to hear that it did not work. Just to make sure that we do not have a misunderstanding here: Do you still get the "select() to /dev/rtc..." error if you run the hwclock command with the "--directisa" option? (hwclock should bypass /dev/rtc when called like that, therefore I am a pit puzzled.) You might have to try some of the other options described in "man hwclock".
