Strange.  Do you also have /etc/rcS.d/S40networking,
/etc/rc0.d/S35networking and /etc/rc6.d/S35networking?  Those all are
linked to /etc/init.d/networking here (in Testing).

Glad you got it fixed!  Although I don't understand _why_ you needed
that link to do it.  :+)
