I started xfdesktop and then saved the session and from then on it
worked well. But...

...yes, I also lost all my settings. Fortunately the old files were in
place, so it was easy to replace the new ones. I like the composite
window management, but I certainly don't like that the position of the
popups (the little triangles in the panel) can't be changed anymore.
They are to the right of the actual button, consuming a lot of space
and ruining the CDE-like feeling where they are on the top.
I also like the idea of placing Gnome applets in the panel - it solved
the badly needed keyboard layout switcher problem.
