2.4.something (I believe 2.4.20 and after) was able to run SMP kernels
on UNI processors with very little resource usage. So it has been a
while since SMP kernels could run easily on UNI processors.

It is the reasoning Debian and many other Distros have been compiling
for SMP only.

The only real difference now is the support for >4GB of memory. I am not
sure how well the 64GB enabled stuff runs on a non-64GB capable machine.

Maybe I should install one and find out.
