The only thing is most hardware vendors don't care about the people buying the product. The reason ATI/nVidia won't release their drivers open source is because they are afraid that their competition will steal their ideas. But look at Intel, they've been doing it for a while know and I don't see them going out of business anytime soon. Really, it's more a business thing than a morals thing.
