One of the easiest ways to diagnose a problem is to use 'script' and an xterm. 1) get script (I think its installed by default) 2) open an xterm (or similar) 3) type the command 'script' to start a script session (or use options to change the file name) 4) type the command you want to test like 'firefox' 5) use the software and see the error messages and wait for it to fail 6) type 'exit' to end the script session 7) post the 'typescript' file to a website somewheres 8) post a message telling us where the typescript file is.
