In the end I decided
a) stable alsaconf was too old
b) installing unstable/testing ALSA didn't help
c) trying to compile ALSA up myself failed due to missing kernel source 
d) to replace the Live! with another (old) (Creative) soundcard that was
laying about - this worked first time!
