My I offer an alternative approach that I haven't tried but its just an
idea?

Is RHEL or SUSE that works with those binaries available free or do you
have to purchase something? Could you not have a very minimal install
of that distro and have a separate debian install in which to do normal
work? Could this be accomplished with a virtualization system such as
Xen?

Or what happens if you ask EMC to provide binary kernel modules for
Debian Etch?
