I hope you installed etch (currently Debian testing, soon to be Debian
4.0) because chances are that the kernel included in Debian 3.1 is not
new enough to support that sound card.

After you install etch, install alsa-utils like:

aptitude install alsa-utils

and run the program "alsaconf" as root.

This should configure your sound card correctly.
