Yes, I finally did exactly that, and everything seems to work fine. I was rather surprised that the so much hyped "Debian-way" of doing things did not work.... My guess is that some link file somewhere was screwed and the module (though was loaded) was not identifiable by xserver-xorg... Thanks Kruton
