This is the problem that I see. If programs make this assumtion then whatever you do that changes that will cause a problem when you have 2 sound cards and dont want to use the first one. could you provide the output of /var/log/messages before and after you plug in the usb sound card. It may provide me some amusment to see if it provides further insight.
